The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are set to work together to implement the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) for 2023-2050, Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan 2022-2041, and climate policy support project, emphasizing research and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin and the new USAID Mission Director Reed Aeschliman discussed this collaboration in a courtesy meeting at the ministry on Thursday.
During the discussion, Minister Md Shahab Uddin sought assistance in biotechnology, biosafety, capacity development, ecosystem service valuation, and the development of lab facilities at the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute.
USAID Mission Director Reed Aeschliman expressed his origination's intent to collaborate on watershed co-management in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and a nationwide wildlife conservation project to combat wildlife trafficking and poaching.
USAID will also assist in biotechnology, food security, biotech products, agricultural products, climate policy support, research, and greenhouse gas emission reduction, Reed Aeschliman said.
"We want to ensure that local farmers, as beneficiaries, have sustainable livelihoods," he said.
The USAID new mission director also expressed the desire to support sustainable climate actions and biodiversity conservation in wetlands, the Sundarbans, the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and the Sylhet region.
Dr Farhina Ahmed, secretary at the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, along with additional secretaries Iqbal Abdullah Harun, Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, and Fahmida Khanam, and high-ranking USAID officials, were present at the meeting.
