Shipping Ministry gets 10th highest allocation to save the rivers. Collection of 35 more dredgers ongoing.
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday said the Ministry of Shipping stands among the ten ministries which got the highest allocation in the proposed budget for fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25) to save the rivers of Bangladesh.
The state minister was addressing the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected executive committee of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Officers Association at Biam Foundation in the capital on the day.
In this proposed budget, the Shipping Ministry got Tk11,270 crore for FY25, and the allocation is Tk3,426 crore higher than the revised budget of Tk7,844 crore of the previous FY24.
“The Ministry of Shipping gets some of the highest allocation of funds, among 10 ministries, in the proposed budget. The only reason for this is to maintain and protect the rivers of Bangladesh. It is our responsibility to protect the flow of the river. tThis is our big challenge,” Chowdhury further stated.
The state minister said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emphasized on ensuring the flow of the rivers of Bangladesh.
“Bangabandhu said the navigability of the rivers of Bangladesh has decreased, the navigability of the rivers should be maintained. To maintain the navigability of the river, Bangabandhu procured seven dredgers within three and a half years of independence. After the assassination of Bangabandhu, no other government had procured any dredgers till 2008,” he added.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangabandhu, collected 38 dredgers in the last three terms of her government. More than 35 dredgers collection is ongoing,” Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury added.
The state minister urged the officers of the BIWTA to be responsible to uphold the dream of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make Bangladesh a river friendly country.
So they began solemnly dancing round and round goes the clock in a louder tone. 'ARE you to set.
